Wahana Visi Indonesia Carries Out Mangrove Planting and Waste Cleanup in Surabaya
Antaranews, Surabaya September 28, 2025 – Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI), through the MARVEL SEA Project (Mangrove Adaptive and Resilient Village for Enhanced Livelihoods), carried out a concrete environmental conservation effort by planting 1,000 mangrove seedlings and cleaning up waste along Surabaya’s coastline. The activity took place on September 27–28, 2025, in the Afur River area of Wonorejo Village and fishponds of MARVEL SEA beneficiaries, involving 100 Kind Circle (KinCir) volunteers.
This initiative is not just symbolic; it responds to real challenges faced by Surabaya. The city generates 1,800 tons of waste daily, equivalent to 0.6 kg per person per day (Surabaya Environmental Agency, 2024), while East Java has 30,839.3 hectares of mangrove forests (KLHK, 2024). As the provincial capital, mangrove rehabilitation in Surabaya is a strategic step to promote public education, flood mitigation, and climate change adaptation.
Charles Franz, Area Program Manager of Simokerto WVI, stated:
“This program aligns with WVI’s commitment to empower communities and protect children. We believe a healthy environment is the foundation for children’s well-being. Through this collaboration, we aim to ensure coastal communities become more resilient to climate change while fostering awareness to safeguard nature for future generations.”
In addition to mangrove planting, volunteers also conducted waste cleanup along rivers and coastal areas, sorting organic, inorganic, and hazardous waste, and transporting it to official waste facilities with support from the Surabaya Environmental Agency. The activity also included environmental education and interactive sessions with children in the assisted areas.
This initiative was supported by World Vision Korea (WVK) with a total budget of approximately IDR 70 million under the MARVEL SEA Project.
As a closing note, this collaboration reflects WVI’s vision and mission to help communities, particularly in creating a healthier and more sustainable environment. Moving forward, WVI will continue to deliver similar programs with the spirit of generating positive impact for communities and future generations.
